Emma Carey is a graduate of Liverpool University having lived in Liverpool all her life. Emma qualified as a Solicitor with the firm in June 2000 and is the head of the firm's family department. Emma became a Partner In June 2005.
She specialises in divorce, financial disputes, children issues including care proceedings, co-habitation disputes and she has a particular interest in domestic violence issues. Emma has dealt with a number of international children cases including child abduction. Emma's clients appreciate her caring and understanding approach.
Away from the office she enjoys socialising with her wide network of friends.
Paula Mansfield - Partner
Paula graduated from Hull University in 1995 and qualified as a Solicitor in April 2000 having graduated with a LLB(Hons) Degree. She joined the practice in October 2007 and was made an associate in March 2009. Paula has a wealth of experience of all family matters involving the breakdown of a marriage and has advised on pre-nuptial agreements and complex financial settlements.
In addition, Paula can deal with matters involving unmarried couples and civil partnerships and can provide advice as to whether a cohabitation contract would be appropriate at the commencement of a relationship or, following a cohabiting couple’s separation on disputes involving property or children matters.
Paula is an accredited member of the Family Law Panel.
Paula is also an accredited Resolution specialist in the areas of Advanced Financial Provision and Emergency Procedures in Ancillary Relief. Resolution is an organisation of over 5000 members of the legal profession who are committed to a non-confrontational approach to family matters. However, if matters cannot be resolved by negotiation then Paula is an experienced advocate in the family courts and will be pro active in ensuring a satisfactory outcome for her clients.
Paula is a collaborative lawyer. The aim of collaborative law is to resolve family disputes without going to court. Each person appoints their own lawyer but instead of conducting negotiations between you and your partner by letter or phone you meet together with your lawyers to work things out face to face.
In her spare time, Paula is a keen fitness fanatic and enjoys circuit training and running. In addition Paula enjoys the theatre, reading and travelling.
Nicola Harris (nee) Wordley - Associate Solicitor
Nicola graduated from the University of Liverpool in 2004 with a Degree in Law with Honours and joined MSB as a trainee solicitor in 2005. She qualified as a Solicitor in 2007 and is now an Associate Solicitor within the firm's matrimonial department.

Nicola is an accredited member of the Law Society’s Family Law Panel. Members have to show, to the satisfaction of the Law Society, that they have and will maintain a high level of knowledge, skills, experience and practice in the area of family law.
Nicola is also an accredited member of the Law Society’s Children Panel. Members have to show, to the satisfaction of the Law Society, that they have and will maintain a high level of knowledge, skills, experience and practice in the area of children law. Nicola can therefore undertake all aspects of representing children in both private law proceedings and care proceedings.
Resolution accredited specialist for Private law Children cases and Domestic Violence .
Nicola has a particular interest in child law, and can represent parents or guardians and children in relation to any court proceedings. Nicola also represents parents involved in pre proceedings involving the Local Authority.
Nicola has experience and a keen interest in child abduction matters and has represented parents whose children have been removed to Non Hague convention countries including Pakistan and Thailand.
Nicola also regularly undertakes work for victims of domestic violence and harassment, as well as finding time to provide free legal advice to members of the local community by attending Citizens Advice Bureau in Wavertree.
Outside of work Nicolas main interest is relaxing and socialising with her family and friends and travelling in order to facilitate her favourite hobby....scuba diving.
Emma Palmer - Associate Solicitor
Emma is an associate solicitor in the family department having joined MSB in 2007. Emma graduated from University of Leicester and undertook her LPC through College of Law, Chester.
Emma undertakes work in both financial remedy proceedings on divorce and children matters with experience and expertise in undertaking cases with an international element. Having completed a masters degree with her research dissertation on 'The Human Rights Act in the context of care proceedings', Emma understands the need to protect clients from human rights breaches throughout their case. Emma's clients appreciate her understanding nature and dedication to achieving the best possible outcome.
Emma is on the Law Society’s Children Panel which evidences an expertise in children cases, regularly representing parents, grandparents and children in private law cases and those involving social services.
Emma is also a Resolution accredited specialist in child abduction and domestic abuse cases, demonstrating a high level of expertise and experience in these areas.
Emma is a member of a number of associations including the Association of Women's Solicitors and Women's Aid.
Jane Sampson - Consultant Solicitor
Jane Sampson is our specialist In House Advocate Solicitor with over 20 years experience in all aspects of Family Law specialising in Advocacy at all levels. She has been a member of the Child Care Panel for over 18 years providing representation for parents and children in the courts through this very stressful process. She also undertakes training for the Law Society for Child Care Panel Membership and regularly lectures for Liverpool Law Society in Family Law.
Amelia - Jade Thompson - Solicitor
Amelia graduated from the University of Liverpool in 2007 and completed the Legal Practice Course at the College of Law, Chester in 2008. Amelia worked as a Paralegal for 18 months before joining MSB in May 2010, starting her Training Contract in September 2010.
Amelia qualified as a Solicitor in September 2012 and is currently enjoying her role in the Family Department.
Amelia undertakes work in all aspects of Family Law with a particular interest in matters involving children and domestic violence. Amelia has represented parents who have faced allegations of physical, emotional and sexual harm and clients appreciate her non-judgemental and sensitive approach.
In her free time Amelia enjoys spending time with family and socialising with friends.
Wendy Eves - Solicitor
Wendy is a fully trained and accredited mediator, having trained with the Family Mediators Association and with Resolution. She is authorised to undertake Mediation Information and Assessment Meetings (known as MIAMs) as required by the Ministry of Justice. Wendy undertakes mediation in respect of issues involving children and finances, including high value financial disputes and international children matters.
Wendy has almost 20 years experience as a family lawyer and brings that experience to mediation. She continues to work as a family lawyer and as a mediator, and has an calm and practical approach to mediation which undoubtedly assists the parties in resolving disputes more quickly and easily than via the conventional route of court proceedings.
Joanna Jandula - Solicitor
Joanna obtained Masters Degree in Law and Administration at the University of Wroclaw in Poland in 2006 and graduated from University of Central Lancashire in the UK in 2011. Dual graduation and completing her training contract led to her qualification as a solicitor of England and Wales in January 2015.
The knowledge of two legal systems allows Joanna to act for numerous clients who have complex family connections both in England and/or in Poland and enabled her to effectively deal with international family law cases to include international child abduction, relocation and international divorces. Joanna is a member of Child Abduction Lawyers Association (CALA).
Joanna specialises in family law and all aspects of relationship breakdown including divorce, division of finances, residence and contact arrangements for children. Joanna is currently the only Polish speaking solicitor in Merseyside who conducts advocacy. She also deals with urgent court applications and prepares change of name deeds.
Joanna has been working in solicitors’ practices for over 8 years during which she developed not only great understanding of her clients’ needs but also experience in dealing with complex cases that require sublime strategy and technical skills.
Joanna works as legal advisor to Merseyside Polonia (charity for ethnic minorities in Merseyside) where she also delivers seminars and offers a number of free legal sessions. Joanna’s main goal is to develop a niche area of law that specialises in assisting minority groups in the city with their legal issues.
Outside of work Joanna’s main interest is basketball and visiting historic sites. She is also an amateur oil pastels and acryl painter.

Hayley Catherall - Associate
Hayley qualified as a Legal Executive in 2000 and became a Fellow in 2002, having worked in Solicitor’s offices since leaving full-time education and in Family Law Departments since she was aged 20. Hayley has a wealth of experience in all aspects of Family Law, dealing with divorce and financial matters relating thereto, children matters; including residence and contact issues; to include children issues with social services involvement.
Hayley is an Accredited Resolution Specialist in the area of Co-habitation and can provide detailed advice with respect to unmarried relationship breakdown and with respect to the preparation of Co-habitation agreements.
Hayley is also an Accredited Resolution Specialist with respect to domestic violence and remains committed to assisting both men and women who have been victims of domestic violence.
Hayley prides herself on being approachable and caring by nature with a sensible approach to achieving the best possible outcome for her clients.
Pat Davies - Mediator
Pat Davies, who has been mediating since 1998 and who is well known and well respected as a family mediator throughout Merseyside and Cheshire, has joined MSB Family Mediation. Pat is based at their city centre mediation site in Silkhouse Court.
Pat has been at the forefront of mediation for many years and has contributed significantly to the development of the mediation service in the local area.
As a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives, Pat had an heavy case load of often highly contentious matters and gained extensive experience in all matters relating to private law family work for over 25 years. She frequently represented clients in domestic violence situations, the care of children following separation of parents and financial settlements within matrimonial proceedings.
After witnessing the impact of matrimonial and cohabitee disagreements upon those involved, and particularly children caught up in high conflict situations, she sincerely believed there was a better way of resolving family disputes.
Pat completed her training as a Family Mediator in 1998. She was admitted to the Law Society Panel and gained accreditation with the Legal Aid Commission enabling her to offer mediation within a legal aid contract for All Issues Mediation.
Pat completed qualifications in direct consultation with children, enabling her to meet with children within the mediation process and continues with advanced training in this area.
Pat is a Professional Practice Consultant with the Family Mediators’ Association. She has gained full Accreditation within this supervisory body and is recognised by the Family Mediation Council as holding Senior Mediator status.
Pat has been appointed as lead mediator by the Ministry of Justice in past awareness campaigns to enlighten the general public about the benefit of family mediation and continues to promote the mediation process within the legal profession as a member of the mediation sub-group of the Family Justice Board for Merseyside and Cheshire.
Pat loves the theatre, reading, keeping fit and active and has enjoyed many stage performances with the Birkenhead Operatic Society Trust.
Sarah Achilles - Solicitor
Sarah graduated from the University of Warwick in 2009 with degree in Law with Honours. She then went on to complete her legal practice course at The College of Law, Chester attaining her diploma in legal practice with distinction. Sarah completed her training contract at a local firm specialising in family law and has been working in this practice area for the past four years.
Sarah is now part of our family law team having qualified in April 2013. She specialises in all aspects of family practice and has a particular interest in matrimonial matters and the financial aspects of relationship breakdown. Sarah is active committee member of Young Resolution Merseyside and assists in promoting the Resolution Code of Practice with her peers.
In her spare time, Sarah enjoys keeping active and is a keen horse rider. Sarah is also an acrobatic cheerleading coach having previously been a competitive gymnast.
Kirsty Leather - Solicitor
Kirsty is a private Family Law specialist, with a sympathetic and pragmatic approach. Dealing with a wide range of issues, including separation and divorce, co-habitation issues (such as TOLATA and Schedule 1 children claims), pre-nuptial agreements, financial matters, children disputes and injunctions.
Having had a wide and varied exposure to all types of family work, to include those with an international children and financial element. Kirsty has worked on a number of expat divorces. Kirsty is well versed in dealing with all issues whether complex or simple. Having enjoyed international work, Kirsty has enhanced her knowledge by completing a Masters Degree in International Legal Practice, with electives in Private Client, Business and Finance management, International commercial law and specialised in removing children from the Jurisdiction.
Kirsty attends various networking events and in her spare time enjoys running long distance.
Eve McGowan - Solicitor
Eve is a solicitor in the family department having recently joined the team at MSB.
Eve graduated from Kings College London and then completed the Graduate Diploma in Law and the Legal Practice Course with the College of Law, Chester. She qualified in 2008.
Eve is a member of the Family Law Advanced Panel with specialisms in Child Abduction and Domestic Violence.
Eve has a range of experience covering divorce, private and public law children matters, injunctions and child abduction matters. However she now has a particular focus on acting for parents in care proceedings. She also has a keen interest in Child Abduction proceedings and has represented clients in both incoming and outgoing abduction matters with successful outcomes.
Outside of work Eve enjoys exercise and has enjoyed various long distance runs including the Liverpool Marathon. She enjoys spending time with friends and family and cooking Sunday dinners.
Emma Squires - Consultant Solicitor
Emma graduated from Nottingham Trent University in 2000 and completed the LPC at De Montfort University, Leicester in 2003. Emma undertook a training contract with a firm in Nottingham before moving back to Liverpool on qualification. Emma qualified as a solicitor in 2004 and has specialised in Family Law since that time.
Emma is a Consultant Solicitor in the family department specialising in care proceedings and advocacy. Emma is a member of the Children Panel and represents both parents and the children in public law proceedings.
Outside of work Emma enjoys running, spending time with her family and socialising with friends.
Mary Holmes - Family Executive
I have specialised in care proceeding for over 20 years and have a high level of expertise and experience in this area of law. I have represented parents, grandparents and children during this time. I have also been appointed on several occasions by the Official Solicitor.
I have represented clients with many difficulties including serious mental health problems.
I have represented parents who have been faced with serious allegations of physical emotional and sexual abuse. I have experience in abduction matters.
I pride myself on having a non judgmental down to earth approach with clients .
Out of work my interests are socialising with family and friends and I love travelling.
Rebecca Butler - Legal Executive G.CILEx
Rebecca is a graduate Legal Executive based in our Wavertree office. Rebecca breezed through her CILEX exams with confidence having worked in our family department for nine years gaining experience in children matters, non molestation orders and divorce. Rebecca is instructed in all family matters/
A member of our international family team, Rebecca often undertakes domestic and international relocation cases and child abduction cases. Committed to legal aid, Rebecca is quickly able to advise clients whether they qualify and obtain legal aid without delay for those that do. Rebecca's clients appreciate her direct approach and sensible advice.
Outside of work Rebecca takes every opportunity to travel to exotic locations.
Stephanie Stubbs - Family Executive G.CILEx (on Maternity Leave)
Stephanie joined the Family Team at MSB in 2009 having worked within Family Law since the age of 17. Stephanie is a Graduate Member of CILEx and is working towards becoming a Fellow of the Institute in 2016.
Stephanie has been actively involved with promoting CILEx in the Liverpool and surrounding areas and was the previous Chair of the CILEx Liverpool Branch in 2014.
Stephanie undertakes work in all aspects of Family Law with a particular interest in respect of divorce, financial matters, domestic violence and children matters.
In her spare time, Stephanie enjoys long walks and spending quality time with family and friends.
Stephanie is presently on maternity leave.
Nicole Kerr - Trainee Solicitor
Nicole graduated from Hope University in 2010 with a BA (Hons) Degree in English Literature. She then went on to study the GDL at the University of Law, Chester which she completes this year. Nicole is due to attend John Moore’s University in September to study the LPC.
Nicole joined MSB in October 2012; she is the Legal Assistant to Emma Palmer and is starting her training contact with MSB in September 2014. Nicole has a particular interest in children matters and has had the opportunity to assist on many public and private law cases involving children; she has a particular interest in care proceedings and is committed to achieving the best possible outcome for the client.
Originally from Belfast, Nicole has established strong links with the Irish community in Liverpool since moving here to study. In particular Nicole works closely with Irish Community Care, which is a charity based in Liverpool that offers assistance to the Irish and Irish traveller communities. Nicole is also a member of the Institute of Irish Studies and enjoys attending lectures and networking events organised by the institute.
In her spare time Nicole enjoys entertaining friends and family (especially her sister who has also settled in Liverpool after originally coming to study). She enjoys cooking and baking and is getting better with practice! She loves to read and attends a book club in the summer months when she has a break from studying.
Rebecca Emmitt - Trainee Solicitor
Rebecca joined MSB in August 2014 , Rebecca graduated from Chester University in November 2014 where she attained a 2.1 in law LLB. Rebecca has had experience working with the police and trading standards where she was involved in the undercover work of underage persons purchasing alcohol.
Rebecca has a keen interest in family law and is looking to get the chance to do her legal practice course in the future.
Away from the office Rebecca enjoys going for long walks in the Lake District and exercising in the gym.
Emma Irons - Trainee Legal Executive
Emma is a legal assistant in our family department having worked at MSB Solicitors since 2008. Emma is studying towards her qualification to become a legal executive and should achieve this aim in 2018. Emma provides clients with assistance at court and is experienced in drafting divorce papers with clients. Organised and affable Emma is a treasured member of our team, valued by colleagues and clients alike. Emma currently assists Kirsty Leather.
Stacey Halbert - Trainee Legal Executive
Stacey joined MSB Solicitors in 2011 as an office junior and has since progressed to a Trainee Legal Executive in our family department. Stacey is currently an Associate Member of CILEX, working towards becoming a Fellow with a view to becoming a fee earner.
She is due to finish her studies in 2017. Stacey is currently very active in promoting CILEX and is a Secretary for their Liverpool branch and plays an active role in organising events.
Stacey has experience in all aspects of family law but is most interested in children matters and is keen to develop some knowledge in Mediation.
Stacey provides client’s with assistance at court on a regular basis and enjoys gaining the court experience whilst there. Stacey is committed to providing client’s with the best possible client care and helping them reach the best outcome possible.
Out side of work Stacey is an avid reader with a passion for literature and trips to the theatre. Stacey enjoys spending her time with her family and friends.
Thomas Stockton - Legal Assistant
Thomas has been with MSB for 5 years and has an in-depth knowledge of Family Law. He has recently completed his Law Degree and is due to commence his training contract in September 2014 with a view to qualifying as a solicitor.

Natasha Johnson - Legal Assistant
Natasha graduated from the University of Liverpool in 2013 with a 2:1 LLB with Honours in Law. With a goal of becoming a Barrister she then completed the Bar Professional Training Course in 2014 and obtained a grade competent. She has a profound interest in Family Law and in particular cases involving children.
Natasha joined MSB in October 2014 and since joining the team she has been keen to have as much involvement in the Court process as possible. Natasha has obtained injunctions for Clients who suffered from domestic abuse and is committed to helping our Clients get the best possible outcome.
Outside of work Natasha enjoys socialising with her friends, going on holiday and spending time with her loved ones.
Melissa Taylor - Legal Assistant
Melissa joined MSB Solicitors in 2007.
Melissa is currently dealing with all Guardian files and works closely with Jane Sampson who undertakes any Advocacy MSB requires. Melissa has experience in divorce, injunctions, finances and children matters such as contact matters and children in care.
Melissa is interested in Mediation training and hopes by summer 2016 to be working within our Mediation department.
Melissa has a friendly approachable nature and is willing to assist clients whatever the issue maybe. Melissa attends Court with clients and backs Counsel.
